The Local Council Urban Greening Scheme 2022 aims for the implementation of greening and environmental projects in urban and peri-urban areas under the jurisdiction of Local Councils. It focuses on the development of projects involving innovative green and blue infrastructure, nature-based solutions, Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) and embellishment of degraded urban zones.
The focus on urban greening will create greener spaces and a cost-effective alternative to traditional ‘grey infrastructure’ within highly urbanised centres to enhance the provision of ecosystem services such as air quality, reduced noise pollution, controlled flooding, water quality, space for recreation and climate mitigation and adaptation and the general well-being of society.
The scheme will be financed by Ambjent Malta and projects can be submitted by Local Councils under the following three categories:
Category A: Major Green Infrastructure
Grant: 85% up to a maximum of Euro 300,000
Category B: Medium-scale Projects
Grant: 85% up to a maximum of Euro 60,000
Category C: Small Embellishment Projects
Grant: 85% up to a maximum of Euro 12,000

Two stakeholder information sessions will be held online on Monday, 24th January, 2022, at 10:00 and Tuesday, 25th January, 2022 at 10:00. During these information sessions, participants will be guided on the main features of the Scheme and the application form, together with a presentation on potential project ideas and case studies that are applicable to local scenarios.
